SELECT VS RECREATIONAL SOCCER INFORMATION (back to top)
What is the difference between Select and Recreational teams?
The Sunrise Soccer Club, SSC, supports two levels of soccer development; a recreational program along with a highly competitive select program. Because SSC provides these two levels the club has been very successful. The recreational program has a great philosophy; "Everyone plays." Consequently, any young person who wants to play soccer can join a SSC recreational team. Select teams, on the other hand, require prospective players to compete with their peers for a position on the team. However, like Recreational Teams, all Select Players are required to play at least half of every game.
Select teams typically have longer playing seasons than recreational teams of an equivalent age, and opposing teams are more competitive. Recreational teams have a season that goes from September to November, with a total of ten games. Select teams have a season that begins in August and can go as far as January of the next year. Select teams can play 20 to 30 games a season, depending mostly on tournament participation.
Each Select team in the SSC is assigned a coach from the clubs' experienced coaching staff. These coaches typically have many years of experience and have taken several coaching certification courses. Recreational coaches, on the other hand, are volunteer parents, always dedicated to their teams, but sometimes less experienced at coaching. Due to the select nature of the select teams, the coaches expect higher level of player commitment to soccer as compared to the recreational program. Commitment is often as important as skill in building a soccer team.
Team Structure:
The SSC will create as many recreational teams as are needed, depending on the number of registered recreational players. Each player assigned to a team based on age and gender, with the age levels divided into seven groups, U6, U8, U10, U12, U14, U16 and U19.
The SSC normally sponsors 3-10 select teams depending on the number of talented players available. Ideally, one boy's team and one girl's team at each of the five select age levels (U10, U12, U14, U16 and U19) can be created. In some cases, where the pool of talented players is large, the SSC fields two teams in a given age group. Typically the two teams are divided by age, with one team containing mostly second year players and the other team containing mostly first year players.
The SSC reserves the right to choose the number of select teams it wishes to field in any season as circumstances warrant. Some season may have fewer teams (due to the lack of sufficiently skilled players), and some seasons may have more teams (if there is a sufficient amount of talented players).
Each select team is under the direct leadership of at least two adults: the team coach and the team assistant coach. All select coaches are the most qualified available, have demonstrated a commitment to soccer, and most have substantial coaching experience. The coaching staff is committed to the development of individual soccer skills and competitive team play. This development program is a multi-year building process that starts with the under-10 age group and continues through the under-19 teams. The emphasis at all levels is on consistent, higher-quality, competitive soccer.
The Select Coaches' Coordinator with the approval of the Board of Directors assigns a coach to each team each year. The team coach, with the approval of the Board of Directors, typically chooses assistant coaches although the Board may assign an assistant coach to a team.
Frequently Asked Questions about Select Soccer (back to top)
Q: What is Select Soccer?
A: Select Soccer is Division III soccer, one level above the Division IV Recreation Program (no tryouts), and one level below Division I competitive soccer. Select soccer gives players a great chance to experience a more ambitious level of soccer than offered in the Recreation Program. The Select Program will also introduce players to tournament level soccer without as much time, money and travel commitment some Division I soccer requires.
Q: What is the approximate cost?
A: You can expect to pay between $200 -$500 more than playing on a Recreational team. This will vary from team to team and is dependent on the cost of uniforms, number of tournaments played, sponsors and fundraising events.
Q: How much practice time is involved?
A: This will also vary from team to team. Typically practices will begin in June and end in late November or early December. Most Select teams practice 2 -3 times a week for 1.5 – 2 hours.
Q: What is the approximate number of games in the season?
A: Most teams will play in 3 – 5 tournaments including District VI Cup at the end of the season. There are typically 10regular season games in addition to the tournaments. Most teams will end up playing 20 to 30 games total for the season.
Q: What is the approximate number of tournaments and travel time?
A: The amount of travel required will vary depending on the age division. Many of the tournaments are in cities within the Sacramento Metropolitan area. Away tournaments (out of Sacramento area) are typically within a 2 hour drive of Roseville.
Q: As a parent, what are some ways I can participate?
A: Parent participation is highly encouraged and welcomed on any team within the Select Program. Typical team support positions are Asst. Coaches, Team Manager, Tournament Director, Practice Helpers, Treasurer, Video Camera person, etc.
Q: What if my child gets more than one offer?
A: Each age division will typically have two to four teams depending on the number of players and the talent level of those trying out. All of the coaches for the teams will be present at the tryouts. After the last day of tryouts, team coaches will notify players if they have been selected, usually within three days. Players always have the right to play for the team o their choice if they have an offer from more than one team. Please keep in mind that if a player rejects an offer from a team, that coach is not obligated to hold a spot on the roster for the player, and that player must accept their next offer if wanting to play in the RYSC Select Program.
Please feel free to ask coaches or board members present at tryouts if you need clarification on this topic.
Q: Important note about the U10 age division:
A: Please be aware that special rules apply to U10 players only. Players in this age group CANNOT play in tournaments (jamboree play is allowed). Also, U10 players cannot travel out of the Sacramento area and play in overnight jamborees. Standings are not kept for U10. Teams are allowed to play 20 games maximum during the season. These rules exist to allow the U10 players a chance to play at a higher level without the additional pressure to win.
Q: What equipment should I bring when trying out?
A: When showing up to a Select tryout, please remember:
Ball
Bottle of Water
Shin Guards
Q: Any other hints?
A: Arrive 30 minutes before tryouts for registration and to warm-up.
Avoid crossing fields being used by others to show consideration
